Our Story & Space
Aro is the direct product of a local family's deep love of Spain, Spanish food, and Spanish beverages. Created after visits to popular and breaktaking Spanish restaurants, Aro (Spanish for “ring”) transports guests into dining rooms inspired by tapas bars of San Sebastián and Barcelona. Owners Jeremy and Christina Horwitz built Aro to contribute to the growth of Western New York.
Construction began in 2015 and ended in February 2016. Aro’s space was created from a former greeting card shop and cellular phone store. M&T Bank was a loyal, supportive partner during the extended building process.
While locally inspired, Aro authentically recreates the look and feel of tapas restaurants in Spain. Dark woods, bull heads, and photographs of Spanish cities work together to create an elegant, “smart casual” atmosphere. Similarly, our bar and lounge were designed using elements from our favorite San Sebastián pintxo bars, with additional space to increase our guests' comfort.
Learn About Private Dining at Aro
Authentic Spaces, Local Materials Jeremy and Christina sought out re-usable materials from historic barns, churches, and factories in Erie and Niagara Counties to use in both functional and decorative ways throughout Aro. Wooden doors became chandeliers, wall decor, and the entrance to a closet. Church pews turned into banquettes. And a gigantic metal factory gear was transformed into Aro’s most interesting table.

“Besides serving the best desserts in the area, Aro Bar de Tapas has brought an exciting new cuisine to WNY. Never, to our knowledge, has someone tried to replicate authentic Spanish tapas to the degree Aro has accomplished... Modern techniques and creative flavor combinations [result] in desserts that not only taste great but are so beautiful, you’ll feel guilty marring their perfection by eating them."
"Exploring what Aro has brought to the table will reward even mildly adventurous diners,” said The Buffalo News. Calling Aro "a principled emulation of a northern Spanish restaurant,” the newspaper raved about dishes such as the Jamón Ibérico de Bellota. “ 'The world’s best ham,' the menu calls it, and I couldn’t disagree after letting some paper-thin shavings melt on my tongue… a masterpiece of pig.” The News also praised Aro’s desserts, noting that their "finesse and flavors were remarkable."

In A DC Minute Date Night: Aro Bar de Tapas
"We pulled our favorite new spots to open in the past year… Pretty much the first restaurant to nail the whole Spanish tapas concept in Western New York, Aro filled a major gap in the scene and we couldn’t be more #thankful. Their tapas menu is legit, service is fantastic, gin-tonic menu on point, and dessert game at the tippy top of the list in WNY."
"Executive Chef Robert Mahoney is providing WNY with an experience that we feel could give any of the top restaurants in DC a run for their money. …It’s hard to contain the excitement we felt after our experience at Aro. It’s not a secret either, for as we sat we looked around at a bustling restaurant full of satisfied and satiated people. From the second you walk in until your very last bite, Aro Bar de Tapas delivers and has now set the bar for all future Buffalo Date Nights."

"[A]s authentic Spanish Tapas as I’ve eaten outside of Spain and as good as you’ll get there. The food is flat out delicious. Just when you think it can’t get any better they bring out the dessert. We appreciate the writers and photographers who have covered Aro, as well as the awards we have received from both publications and our guests. Here’s a sampling.
"Delights abound at this Spanish-styled restaurant, but I keep coming back to the patatas bravas. Fingerling potatoes are split and fried to a golden brown, then jumbled with sauces - garlicky mayonnaise, plus tomato-chile sauce, like spiked ketchup – then dusted with smoked pimenton, or paprika. I kept telling myself it’s just potatoes, then asking why I couldn’t stop."

"The décor is full of dark stained reclaimed wood, modern lighting and vivid Spanish imagery along the walls... The menu is focused on Spanish tapas, with tons of options for sharing and a variety of familiar and exotic ingredients... Make sure that you don’t skip dessert; it’s some of the best in all of WNY."

Aro won the “Best Entree” Award at the 2016 Taste of Clarence for the “Spanish Muffaletta,” an upgraded version of New Orleans' famous Italian/Sicilian sandwich, which debuted at the event and was served as a special at the restaurant.
"Aro Bar De Tapas is the real deal. Having earned multiple awards since opening just a year ago, Aro’s menu breaks food into hams, cheeses, seafood, and various other small plates… Just as cool, the restaurant has embedded America’s first gintoneria – a bar specializing in Spanish-style gin & tonics, craft cocktails and wines right into the dining area."
"Aro Bar de Tapas has become locally famous for its fresh Gintonics,” notes photographer Robert Kirkham in a behind-the-scenes photo gallery, and "specializes in shareable small plates with aggressive Spanish flavors and an obsessive attention to detail."
