Amazing Desserts Our award-winning desserts are unlike anything served elsewhere in Buffalo. From gold-splashed, pearl-laden chocolates to flower-decorated flan, silky housemade ice creams, and ethereally light churros, our desserts celebrate both classic and modern Spanish recipes. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, our pastry team can make you a custom cake with mouthwatering flavors and beautiful designs.
Experience Spanish Dining Authentic Spanish Tapas-style dining is about trying a wide variety of small dishes, hording or sharing each plate as you prefer. Aro’s dinner menu includes world-class hams, cheeses, vegetables, seafood, meat and poultry. On your first visit, we recommend that each guest selects one dish from four or five of the six categories, along with a beverage and a dessert. Two Chef’s Tasting Menus offer chef-guided tours through our menu on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Jeremy & Christina Horwitz, Co-Owners A shared passion for Spanish cuisine led Jeremy and Christina to build Aro in Amherst, where they live with their two daughters and dog Pintxo. With a background in law (Cornell Law School J.D., cum laude), business (Canisius College, M.B.A.), and restaurant reviewing (Buffalo Chow, 2008-2011), Jeremy was uniquely positioned to open Western NY’s first Spanish restaurant. As co-founder of Buffalo Chow, Christina’s love for interior decoration and travel led to Aro’s beautiful, authentically Spanish design.

Our Story & Space
Aro was created by the Horwitz and Kollig families after a providential first meeting. Amherst’s Jeremy and Christina Horwitz were headed to Spain when Hurricane Sandy hit, grounding their NYC flight and cancelling their trip. Taking a train to Washington, they dined that night at D.C.’s top Spanish restaurant, minibar by José Andrés, where Clarence's Scott Kollig was a chef. The incredible meal was unlike anything in Buffalo, using avant garde techniques to enhance flavors, textures, and presentation.
Construction began in 2015 and ended in February 2016. Aro’s space was created from a former greeting card shop and cellular phone store. M&T Bank was a loyal, supportive partner during the extended building process.
While locally inspired, Aro authentically recreates the look and feel of tapas restaurants in Spain. Dark woods, bull heads, and photographs of Spanish cities work together to create an elegant, “smart casual” atmosphere. Similarly, our bar and lounge were designed using elements from our favorite San Sebastián pintxo bars, with additional space to increase our guests' comfort.
Learn About Private Dining at Aro
Scott mentioned that he hoped to move back to Western NY one day, and Jeremy saw an opportunity to work together. In 2014, they visited Spain with plans to open an authentic Spanish restaurant back home. Over drinks at a gintoneria in San Sebastián, they saw a tavern puzzle magically linking an “aro,” a metal ring, to a chain. The magic trick perfectly symbolized their goal: uniting people to create an amazing new dining destination in Amherst. Scott and his talented wife Monica joined Aro as chefs.
Authentic Spaces, Local Materials Jeremy and Christina sought out re-usable materials from historic barns, churches, and factories in Erie and Niagara Counties to use in both functional and decorative ways throughout Aro. Wooden doors became chandeliers, wall decor, and the entrance to a closet. Church pews turned into banquettes. And a gigantic metal factory gear was transformed into Aro’s most interesting table.
